Straw Fedora
The fedora hat is one of the most popular hats, thanks to the fact that it looks amazing and you can find many different styles to suit every need. Its brim goes all the way right around the head and it has a narrower brim. The back of the brim is sharper than usual.
The term Fedora was first used in women’s fashion during the 20th century and in 1919 there were a lot of men and women wearing this type of hat. The fedora hats allowed people to put their imagination to the test. The most popular colors for these hats were red, brown, tan, black and grey.
The term “fedora” was taken from a play by Victorien Sardou. The play was called Fedora and was written in 1882, for Sarah Bernhardt. The actress played Princess Fedora, and the play was first set in US. The princess was the heroine of that play and she wore such a hat. As soon as the other women saw what she was wearing, the new hat was a success. The hat then became worn by men as well and they used to style it up with suits of various colors. The hat was also very practical as it was warm during winter and chilly during summer. There were also a lot of Haredi and other Orthodox Jews that used to wear this hat back in those days and they still do that today.
The hat can be sometimes associated with the Great Depression, Prohibition, and the era of the gangsters and detectives. There were many stars that used to wear this hat back then and one of these stars was Gene Kelly. He used to wear the hat in a lot of movies, and among them was Singin’ in the Rain. In many Hollywood movies in the 40s a lot of detectives used to wear this hat, along with the gangsters, which did the same. The hat was often worn with French coats in those movies. One of those actors was Humphrey Bogart and he wore the hat in Casablanca. You can also see the hat in movies like The Blues Brothers, Freddy Krueger, The Spirit, Daisuke Jigen, Dick Tracy, Rorschach and not to mention Indiana Jones. It has been associated with the film noir characters in most of the cases. The fedora hat was very popular on the east cost of US as well up to the middle of the 1960s, then it began to spread on the west coast. At first, people that were rich used to wear it but then it became part of casual outfits. People often used accessories like ties to match the colors. In the 70s the glamour of the hat disappeared and people forgot about the fedora style.
In the more recent fashion, people have been starting to remember about the straw fedora again. A lot of movie stars are now using the hat and Michael Jackson or Daniel Newton were some of the stars that took this hat and made it their personal signature. The Famous Dallas Cowboys did that as well and the UK novelist Terry Pratchett wears one during the day or night. There are a lot of pop stars that have included this piece of fashion into their look and as a result a lot of people walk on the streets wearing the Fedora hats.
